A number of Hollywood actors have been outspoken when it comes to social issues that are near and dear to them. Some have even testified before Congress. Meryl Streep was one of the first. In 1989, Streep testified before Congress, and on TV talk shows, about the dangers of the plant growth regulator Alar.
Angelina Jolie has appeared before Congress in support of international humanitarian causes. Loretta Swit spoke on behalf of Actors and Others for Animals and other animal rights groups. Catherine Bell addressed the House International Relations Committee on behalf of religious inequality.
Jenny McCarthy became a vocal proponent of regulating vaccines contending that vaccine scheduling led to her son’s autism. Actor and director Ben Affleck appealed to Congress for humanitarian aid in the Congo. The list goes on and on.
The folks in Hollywood are at it again. Will Farrell, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Silverman, Ellen DeGeneres, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and other actors are participating in a campaign to promote more gun control. I bet criminals are taking notice. When you broadcast to the world that you are for gun control, you are either a fool or a liar. You’re a fool because you are telling criminals that it’s safe to rob your house. You’re a liar because criminals know you’re armed.
There are hundreds of gun control laws on the books. More laws prohibiting bad people with a self-professed mission to maim and murder won’t make a difference.
It would be interesting to know how many of these famous actors and actresses are guarded by people with guns. I bet most of them. In 2006, Rosie O’Donnell said that “the right to, to bear arms” is “not really a right.” What she meant to say is that it’s only a right for some people; it does not apply to people like her. During the April 19, 1999, broadcast of her talk show, she stated, “You are not allowed to own a gun, and if you do own a gun, I think you should go to prison.” She has a bodyguard who carries a gun.
Rahm Emmanuel, the very liberal mayor of Chicago, sends his children to the very elite University of Chicago Laboratory School. The students are protected by two armed police officers. This fact didn’t stop him from blasting the NRA in a written statement:
“It’s outrageous and unsettling that the NRA would choose to address gun violence not by taking assault weapons off our streets, but by adding more guns to our schools… That is not the right answer for our society, our schools and most importantly our children.
“People across this country, from small towns to big cities, are united and ready to pass common-sense gun control legislation. The time has come for the NRA to get on board or get out of the way.”
On a side note, these liberal hypocrites find it convenient and socially acceptable to send their children to non-government schools while denying less affluent parents access to school choice and vouchers.
Anti-gun advocate David Gregory of NBC sends his children to the Sidwell Friends School in Washington DC, as does President Obama. It has 11 armed security guards, as it should since our nation’s Capital has a very high murder rate. The murder rate has gone down in recent years because political fat-cats are taking over the bad neighborhoods.
If these Hollywooders and political popping jays would get rid of the bodyguards, turn in the guns we know they have, and send their children to unguarded government schools, we might actually listen to them.
